Michiko Nishijima was born and grew up in Yokohama, the second biggest city in Japan. After an 8-year career of tour guiding, which took her to 45 countries around the world, she became a language teacher.

Michiko immigrated to Canada in 1994 and started to teach Japanese culture and language in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

Although Michiko became interested in photography through her father, it was not until 1998 that she was drawn to serious involvement in photography. She participated in a workshop by
Freeman Patterson and André Gallant. She also joined a local camera club called "Photo Fredericton". She was greatly inspired by how differently she could see things around her through the camera.

By the following year Michiko recognized that photography was becoming very important to her as a medium of expressing herself. Her photo works are creative images, more than just photography. She subsequently joined The Canadian Association for Photographic Art CAPA where several of her photographs have been recognized and awarded honours.

Now living close to nature at the Nashwaak River in New Brunswick, she sets her camera to capture the moment in the beauty around her. She travels in the province, the country, and the world for the joy of exploring with her camera and, as well, searching out good food and wine.
